KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE - Tennessee starting forward RonSlay will miss the rest of the season with a torn ligament in his left knee.

Slay had an MRI exam Monday that confirmed he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the first half Saturday against Syracuse. A date for surgery has not been set.

Slay, a 6-foot-8 junior from Nashville, was hurt under the basket when he bumped knees with a Syracuse player with 4:39 left before halftime. The Vols (8-9) ended up winning 66-62.

``We all have to move on. That's what we're faced with. There's nothing we can do about it,'' Tennessee coach Buzz Peterson said Monday after the Vols' 74-56 win over Middle Tennessee State.

Slay, loved by Tennessee fans and heckled in opponents' arenas for his emotional and flamboyant personality, became a starter this season after being one of the best reserves in the country last year.

He averaged 14.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and was a 75 percent free-throw shooter this season.

Slay sustained a stress fracture in his right leg at the beginning of the season and missed the first two games.

Losing Slay is a blow to the team that has struggled to earn wins under new coach Buzz Peterson. The Vols have lost seven times when the game has come down to the wire.
