RESACA - The state Department of Natural Resources is close to getting the last piece of land to complete plans for the Resaca Battlefield Heritage Preserve in northwest Georgia.
The DNR closed a deal in March to buy 508 acres of the battlefield for $2.36 million. The completed site will cost the department about four million for an interpretive center, signs, trails, overlooks, exhibits, a gift shop and an audio visual room to re-create the battle.

But there's still one problem -- the DNR can't get to the land.

Weams Brown of Recasa owns the land off Georgia 136 that blocks the state's access to the property from the highway.

The state has offered about $20,000 to buy 2.5 acres of Brown's land. Brown wants $150,000.
The battlefield is located 70 miles northwest of Atlanta. It was the site of the first battle in General William Sherman's campaign.
If Brown won't sell, the DNR can either condemn part of his property or use a county road that borders the property on the back.
