CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina head coach John Bunting, who led the Tar Heels in his first season to a Peach Bowl win, was rewarded Thursday with a contract extension and a $100,000 raise.
The board of trustees at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill approved the deal that extends his contract through the 2007 season. Bunting, who was hired in 2000, had been under contract through 2005.
His base annually salary will now be $260,000 - it had been $160,000 - for a total compensation package of $650,000.
After losing its first three games, North Carolina finished 8-5, capped by a 16-10 win over Auburn in the Peach Bowl. Athletic director Dick Baddour said he and school chancellor James Moeser recommended the contract changes.
``We were so pleased with the job coach Bunting and his staff did in their first season and felt it was important to take those measures,'' athletic director Dick Baddour.
Bunting, who played at North Carolina, returned to his alma mater in December 2000 after being an assistant for the New Orleans Saints.
Bunting, 51, said he didn't ask for an extension, ``but I plan on being here longer than five years anyway so I'm glad they have stepped forward and added a few more years.''
