HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA - Alabama A&M named Anthony Jones as its new head coach Thursday.

Jones, 41, spent the last three seasons as head coach at Division II Morehouse, going 8-3 and 8-2 the last two seasons after a 2-8 first year.

``You always look to establish yourself and look for opportunities where you can be successful,'' Jones said. ``There's a lot of things in place here that will help with that. I think this could be one of the best situations in I-AA and black college football.''

Jones signed a four-year contract at about $100,000 per year, plus incentives, said Athletic Director Jim Martin.

Jones was picked for the head coaching job over interim coach Stan Conner and Baylor defensive coordinator Andrea Haley.

He replaces Ron Cooper, who resigned after a 4-7 season.

Jones was a tight end with the Washington Redskins, San Diego Chargers and Dallas Cowboys. He's been an assistant coach at Western Maryland College, South Carolina State and Morehouse before taking over as head coach there.
``He developed a winning program at a place where no one cares about football,'' Martin said. ``We're asking Anthony Jones to come here and put together a winning football program immediately and I think we've got the guy that can do that.''
