ATLANTA - A state representative who proposed giving drivers' licenses to some illegal aliens now says she wants Congress to tackle the issue of undocumented workers.

Democratic Representative Mary Squires of Norcross announced Tuesday that she scrapped her proposal to allow those with valid drivers' licenses from Mexico, Canada or any neighboring state to drive legally in Georgia.

Squires says the plan would encourage illegal aliens to get auto insurance, but later admitted her bill was flawed.

Squires, whose suburban district is about 40 percent Hispanic, sayshe instead plans to ask Congress to expand categories for guest worker visas. She found an unlikely partner to help with the plan.

Phil Kent, president of the conservative Atlanta-based Southeastern Legal Foundation, joined Squires at a news conference to say he supports new visa categories for guest workers in the construction, food processing and hospitality industries.
