VIRGINIA WATER, England - John Daly is going European.

European Tour officials said Tuesday the 1995 British Open champion had paid his $160 membership fee and has indicated he will play the minimum 11 PGA European Tour events required for membership.

He will also remain on the U.S. Tour.

Daly, 35, won his first tournament in six years at the BMW International Open in September in Munich.

Speaking in Melbourne, Australia, on the eve of this week's Heineken Classic, Daly said he had found new enthusiasm for the game after widely publicized bouts with alcohol and failed marriages.

"The world rankings are so important now, and I think dividing my time between America and Europe can help me," he said.

Daly hopes his new dedication will bring results.

"I've had a lot of changes in my life that are for the better and for the first time I have everything the way I want it," he added. "The people around me now I trust with my life. When I'm at home I work on my game and when I'm not at home I work on my game."

"It's nice to be able to worry about golf and not all the other stuff. I've just about two months off, and that's the first time I've had such a break when I wasn't suspended. I almost joined the European Tour last year. But now I have and I think it's not only a good move on my part, but also good for golf."
