ADAIRSVILLE - Two Adairsville High School freshmen were suspended Wednesday for not following instructions to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance.

Principal Larry Parker said the girls were ``simply asked by the teacher to stand with the rest of the class,'' but were not asked to say the pledge or put their hand over their hearts.

When administrators couldn't reach the parents, two staff members drove the students home, Parker said.

One student said she didn't want to say the Pledge of Allegiance because she didn't believe in God, according to Parker.

``We respect the rights of everybody, but when we're in a school setting and we ask kids to do something just like we have for the past 150 years, the teacher is the person in that classroom that people need to cooperate with,'' the principal said.
