A man was struck and killed Friday morning in Homer while he was directing traffic around the scene of a vehicle incident.

Banks County Fire and Emergency Services Chief Steve Nichols said crews responded at approximately 7:13 a.m. Friday to reports of a person hit. Upon arrival, units found an elderly male who had been directing traffic.

The man was assisting in retrieving a vehicle from a ditch and was directing traffic in the dark at 4464 Highway 198 in Homer near Highway 63. A family member told AccessWDUN that the man was a passenger in the vehicle that had become stuck in the ditch.

A passing vehicle struck the male. He received “extreme blunt force trauma” and was in critical condition, according to reports.

An ambulance transported the man to Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

No other injuries were reported in the incident.

The Georgia State Patrol and Banks County Coroner's Office is currently conducting an investigation.
