Gavin Lux hasn't seen the video of the injury that ended his chance of being the Los Angeles Dodgers' starting shortstop this season and has no plans to watch it.

Lux will miss the season with torn ligaments in his right knee after getting hurt running the bases in a spring training game. The 25-year-old came to camp as the top candidate to replace the departed Trea Turner as the Dodgers' shortstop.

“That's one of the hardest parts," Lux said Tuesday, while fighting back tears and leaning on crutches inside the team's facility in Glendale, Arizona. “I think every baseball player’s dream is to play shortstop for the Los Angeles Dodgers.”

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts called the injury a huge blow and said his heart goes out the young infielder.

Lux got hurt Monday when running between second and third base against San Diego after a groundball was hit. Soon after ducking to avoid a throw, he took a couple of steps before his right knee buckled, he stumbled forward and fell to the ground. He said he felt something pop and his leg went numb.

“I tried to duck out of the way of the throw, and I think my cleat got kind of stuck into the ground a little bit and straightened out a little funky, and bowed out, and yeah, I kind of rolled up on my ankle, too. Freak thing, I don’t even think it’s really avoidable,” Lux said. “In hindsight, probably should have just took the throw to the nose and worn it.”

The Dodgers' first-round pick in the 2016 amateur draft, Lux played only nine games at shortstop last season while hitting .276 in 129 games, most at second base and some in left field. He led the NL with seven triples, while hitting six homers and driving in 42 runs.

Turner, the starting shortstop last year, left as a free agenct for Philadelphia. That came after Corey Seager left the Dodgers the previous offseason and signed with Texas.

“Crush my rehab and try to be ready for, you know, 2024, when it rolls around,” Lux said. “It’s kind of all you can do.”

GLASNOW STRAIN

Tyler Glasnow will miss the start of another season for the Tampa Bay Rays.

After not making his debut last season until September following Tommy John surgery, Glasnow is expected to miss six to eight weeks because of a left oblique strain.

The Rays said Tuesday that an MRI detected a grade 2 strain. That came a day after the 29-year-old right-hander, who signed a $30.35 million, two-year contract, cut short throwing live batting practice after six pitches.

Glasnow was the Rays' opening day starter in 2021, when he went 5-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 14 starts. The 6-foot-8 Glasnow then missed nearly 14 months because of the Tommy John surgery.

Residency fights could snare many Georgia voters under bill
Georgia Republicans are considering legislation that could let residency challenges knock thousands of people from the voter rolls. The measure caters to those who still deny President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in the state. The bill was rewritten Monday and would make it easier to challenge the eligibility of voters. It would also require county officials to record video of every ballot drop box and ban counties from hiring election workers who aren’t American citizens. The measure could also let counties opt out of the state’s electronic ballot markers. A separate measure seeks to make it a felony for county officials to take private money to pay for elections.

Duffy had earlier issued a warrant for his arrest. The 25-year-old performer had missed a court-ordered drug test on Feb. 3 and then tested positive on Feb. 8. He is awaiting trial from a July arrest on a charge of trafficking oxycodone. He has pleaded not guilty.

Tennessee officers' conduct probed in woman's death
Four Tennessee police officers are on leave during an internal investigation of how they treated a woman who died a day after she was discharged from a hospital but refused to leave the property. The Knox County District Attorney’s office announced on Monday that it would not press criminal charges after an autopsy determined that 60-year-old Lisa Edwards died of a stroke and that Knoxville police officers' actions did not contribute to her death. That has not stopped public outrage after police released video showing officers accusing Edwards of faking her mobility and breathing problems and ignoring her repeated pleas for help.

Nate Oats apologizes for Brandon Miller's pregame pat-down
Alabama coach Nate Oats apologized and took responsibility for allowing freshman forward Brandon Miller to continue going through a pat-down during pregame introductions. Oats reiterated that the teammate's pat-down of Miller won't continue. Miller had received the pat-down upon his introduction well before the Jan. 15 arrest of then-teammate Darius Miles and another man on capital murder charges in the shooting death of 23-year-old Jamea Harris. Then, police testimony in that case last week accused Miller of delivering Miles’ gun.

Song called it a work in a progress and far from perfect, but is looking to improve everyday. A transfer to the Navy reserves allowed Song to play pro baseball for the first time since 2019.

It's working: Pitch clock shaves 20 minutes from early games
So far, baseball's new speed-up rules are working. The first-ever major league pitch clock and other rules have helped cut more than 20 minutes from spring training games through the first weekend. The average time of game has dropped from 3 hours, 1 minute last spring to 2:39. Players and umpires are still adjusting to the rules. In the Cubs game against the Diamondbacks, both pitcher Joe Mantiply and batter Brennen Davis were penalized for being too slow at the start of the third inning, so Davis' at-bat started with a count of 1-1.

MLB average salary rose 14.8% to record $4.22M last season
Major League Baseball’s average salary rose 14.8% to a record $4.22 million last year after the end of the lockout, boosted by big deals for Max Scherzer, Francisco Lindor, Marcus Semien and Corey Seager. The rate of increase was the highest since a 17.7% increase in 2000 to $1.61 million, according to final calculations by the players’ association. The average had dropped in each of the previous four seasons before 2022, sparking player anger that was expressed by the union during a 99-day lockout that ended last March.

Mets' Scherzer loves 'cat-and-mouse' game of MLB's new rules
New York Mets right-hander Max Scherzer described pitching under Major League Baseball’s new rules as a “cat-and-mouse” game. Contrary to previous years, Scherzer feels the pitcher finally has control of the tempo because of the new pitch clock. In his first start of the Grapefruit League schedule, Scherzer was touched for a run in the second inning but struck out five while working the first two innings of the Mets’ 6-3 win over Washington. The average game time through three days of spring training is 2 hours, 39 minutes, down from an average of 3:01 for all of spring training last year.

Padres slugger Machado draws first pitch clock violation
Tick, tock, Manny Machado. Better watch that pitch clock. Baseball’s new pitch clock made its competitive debut during a limited schedule of spring training openers and Machado, San Diego's All-Star slugger, was called for the first violation. Machado found out the hard way that the pitch clock works both ways. He wasn’t fully in the batter’s box and alert to the Seattle Mariners lefty Robbie Ray as the 15-second clock wound under 8 seconds in the first inning. Umpire Ryan Blakney called time and signaled strike one against Machado. Machado got a hit anyway.

World Baseball Classic in Japan to still feature masks
Fans of the upcoming World Baseball Classic are going to see two versions, depending if the games are in the United States, Taiwan, or Japan. In the United States and Taiwan, fans can cheer and need not wear masks. Taiwan dropped most of its mask mandates this week. For Japan, it’s slightly more complicated as COVID rules are changing more slowly. Cheering will be allowed but masks are likely to remain in place at the Tokyo Dome.

Fight on: It's all USC can do to end baseball's long drought
Twenty-five years have passed since Southern California won its 12th and most recent national title in baseball. The Trojans once were the gold standard in the college game. Four coaches have come and gone since Mike Gillespie won the 1998 championship. Since 2006 USC has made the NCAA Tournament once and has had a winning record in Pac-12 play just twice. The Trojans finished last in 2022 and are picked 10th in coach Andy Stankiewicz’s first year. The Trojans expect to be on an upward trajectory when they move to the Big Ten in two seasons.

Elizabeth Holmes has 2nd child as she tries to avoid prison
Disgraced Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes recently gave birth to her second child. She's citing the event as another reason she should be allowed to delay the start of a more than 11-year prison sentence while her lawyers appeal her conviction for duping investors about the capabilities of her failed company’s blood-testing technology. The child's birth was confirmed in court documents filed in advance of a March 17 hearing about Holmes' bid to remain free. The filing didn’t disclose the date of the birth or the child’s gender, but the news isn’t a surprise. Holmes, 38, was pregnant at the time of her Nov. 18 sentencing

Stellantis is moving closer to closing its factory in Belvidere, Illinois, as it prepares for the costly transition from internal combustion to electric vehicles. The factory with 1,350 employees officially was placed on “idle” by the company on Tuesday. That term means it intends to shut down the plant. Its future is likely to be a lightning-rod issue in national contract talks coming up this summer with the United Auto Workers union, one that could bring a painful strike. The last Jeep Cherokee small SUV rolled off the plant's assembly line on Tuesday.
