That's an error: NYC road sign is spelled 'Jakie' Robinson

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City's Department of Transportation swung and missed with a road sign for the Jackie Robinson Parkway that spelled the baseball Hall of Famer's first name as “Jakie.”

The sign spotted Sunday in Queens featured a picture of Robinson, Major League Baseball's first African American player in the modern era, over the words “Jakie Robinson Parkway.”

Department of Transportation spokesperson Scott Gastel said the botched sign was replaced Monday.

Robinson broke baseball's color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. He is celebrated as a civil rights trailblazer and as a superstar athlete who made the All-Star Game six times and batted .313 over his 10-year MLB career.

The road formerly know as the Interboro Parkway was renamed for Robinson in 1997, the 50th anniversary of his groundbreaking rookie season.

UK police search for infant after missing couple arrested

British police have launched a major search for a two-month-old baby after officers arrested the infant's mother and her boyfriend who had been missing since January. Aristocrat Constance Marten, 35, and her boyfriend Mark Gordon, 48, a convicted sex offender, had been on the run since the baby was born in early January. They have been spotted around the country, and police said they sought to avoid being detected by paying for everything in cash and covering their faces when on CCTV. Marten and Gordon were arrested on suspicion of child neglect late Monday in Brighton in southern England after a tipoff from a member of the public. The baby was not with them.

China says it has been “open and transparent” in the search for the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic and dismissed U.S. criticism as politicizing the issue. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson says China has shared the most data and research results on virus tracing and made important contributions to global virus tracing research. She was responsing to complaints from U.S. officials and members of Congress that China has not been entirely cooperative. Most recently, the U.S. Department of Energy has assessed with low confidence that the pandemic began with the leak of a virus from a lab. Others in the U.S. intelligence community disagree, citing differing opinions within the government.

Alaba abused, Croatia coach critical following FIFA awards

Real Madrid defender David Alaba has been racially abused on social media after voting for Lionel Messi and Croatia coach Zlatko Dalić has accused FIFA of disrespect in fallout from the soccer body’s annual awards ceremony. Messi was named the best men’s player on Monday and Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema placed third. The awards were decided by a poll of national team captains and coaches, selected media and fans voting online. Alaba's vote as Austria's national team captain provoked anger from Real Madrid fans and others. Alaba is Black and Messi played for Madrid-rival Barcelona for 17 years. Dalić says he refused to vote in protest at a perceived lack of respect for himself and his team.

Major League Baseball’s average salary rose 14.8% to a record $4.22 million last year after the end of the lockout, boosted by big deals for Max Scherzer, Francisco Lindor, Marcus Semien and Corey Seager. Contrary to previous years, Scherzer feels the pitcher finally has control of the tempo because of the new pitch clock. In his first start of the Grapefruit League schedule, Scherzer was touched for a run in the second inning but struck out five while working the first two innings of the Mets’ 6-3 win over Washington. Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara has received his NL Cy Young Award trophy for the second time, and this time he has no reason to give it back. When the Baseball Writers’ Association of America originally presented Alcantara with the trophy in January, the plaque that dubbed both Alcantara and AL winner Justin Verlander the most valuable pitchers in their leagues contained a typo, leaving out the second “a” in “valuable.” Alcantara was given a replacement award Sunday at home plate before Miami’s spring training home opener against St. Louis. The replacement contains the more up-to-date “most outstanding” phrasing — and it’s spelled correctly.

Putin bestows friendship award on actor Steven Seagal

Russian President Vladimir Putin has bestowed a state decoration on Steven Seagal, the American action-movie actor who also holds Russian citizenship. The awarding of the Order of Friendship was announced Monday on the Russian government’s internet portal. The order recognizes people who Russia considers to have contributed to bettering international relations. Seagal was a vocal supporter of Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea and last year visited the Russian-held Ukrainian town of Olenivka where dozens of Ukrainian prisoners of war were reportedly killed in an attack for which Russia and Ukraine have blamed each other. Seagal was named in 2018 as a Russian Foreign Ministry humanitarian envoy to the United States and Japan.

St. Louis Zoo bear has second brief escape from enclosure

For the second time in a month, a bear at the St. Louis Zoo figured out how to get out of his enclosure and enjoy a brief taste of freedom. Zoo officials say Ben, an Andean bear, was outside for less than an hour Thursday and stayed within 100 feet of his habitat. The Zoo posted on its Facebook page that guests and staff were moved to indoor locations until the bear was tranquilized and returned to his enclosure. After the first escape on Feb. 7, the zoo added stronger clips to the enclosure's door — but that didn't stop Ben. The zoo said it is working on new solutions to keep the bear inside his habitat.

Alligator pulled from NYC lake had swallowed bathtub stopper

Authorities say the alligator that was rescued from a chilly lake in New York City over the weekend had swallowed a bathtub stopper. Bronx Zoo officials say the nearly 5-foot-long female alligator was lethargic and suffering from exposure to the cold when it was found in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Lake on Sunday. Zoo officials say the alligator is too weak to eat on its own and is being tube-fed. It is also too weak for veterinarians to try to remove the stopper it swallowed. The alligator weighs only 15 pounds and is extremely emaciated.

Fans of the upcoming World Baseball Classic are going to see two versions, depending if the games are in the United States, Taiwan, or Japan. In the United States and Taiwan, fans can cheer and need not wear masks. Taiwan dropped most of its mask mandates this week. For Japan, it’s slightly more complicated as COVID rules are changing more slowly. Cheering will be allowed but masks are likely to remain in place at the Tokyo Dome.

Twenty-five years have passed since Southern California won its 12th and most recent national title in baseball. The Trojans once were the gold standard in the college game. Four coaches have come and gone since Mike Gillespie won the 1998 championship. Since 2006 USC has made the NCAA Tournament once and has had a winning record in Pac-12 play just twice. The Trojans finished last in 2022 and are picked 10th in coach Andy Stankiewicz’s first year. The Trojans expect to be on an upward trajectory when they move to the Big Ten in two seasons.

Noah Song threw and performed agility drills on a back outfield wearing Philadelphia Phillies shorts and T-shirt, a far different different uniform for the 25-year old. Song had been a flight officer training on a U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft before transferring from active duty to reserves. Song impressed in his only pro season, making seven starts for Boston’s Class A Lowell affiliate in 2019, striking out 19 in 17 innings with a 1.06 ERA. He went 11-1 with a 1.44 ERA and 161 strikeouts in 94 innings during his senior year at Navy.

A Paris court is set to rule on a case pitting French and Ugandan environmentalist groups against oil giant TotalEnergies regarding a major oil field and pipeline projects in east Africa. In a 2019 lawsuit, six French and Ugandan activist groups, accused TotalEnergies of failing to prevent human rights violations and risks to the environment. The groups said the oil extraction and pipeline projects are completely or partially impacting the lands of approximately 118,000 people in Uganda and Tanzania. They have asked the court to order the company to comply with the law by implementing measures against “all the risks of serious harm” associated with the projects. TotalEnergies argued that its vigilance plan has been implemented effectively. The ruling is expected Tuesday

Cyprus’ new president has affirmed the island nation’s Western foreign policy orientation as a member of the European Union that seeks to further strengthen its bonds with the U.S. President Nikos Christodoulides also said that he stands firmly with others on “the side of justice” to condemn Russia’s war in Ukraine. Christodoulides spoke after taking his oath of office at a ceremony in parliament on Tuesday.
