Swiatek defeats Gauff again, advances to Dubai final

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Top-ranked Iga Swiatek stayed undefeated against Coco Gauff, beating the American teenager 6-4, 6-2 to reach the final at the Dubai Championships on Friday.

The three-time Grand Slam champion improved to 6-0 against the 18-year-old Gauff, and each victory has been in straight sets. The Pole beat Gauff in last year's French Open final.

“One more to go. Will put all my heart into it,” Swiatek tweeted.

Swiatek will face Barbora Krejcikova, the 2021 French Open champion, in the final on Saturday.

Krejcikova beat No. 3 Jessica Pegula of the United States 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 in Friday's other semifinal.

Swiatek retained her Qatar Open title last week.

US savors World Cup berth; Carmelo Anthony named ambassador

USA Basketball put together different rosters for all six World Cup qualifying windows, and coach Jim Boylen noticed the same two things with each of those groups. One, every player beamed when putting on the “USA” jersey for picture day. Two, by the third or fourth day of practice, the players were coaching each other. It took 52 players and more than a year, but the job is done. USA Basketball is going to the World Cup in the Philippines this summer. And when they get there, three-time Olympic champion Carmelo Anthony will greet them as a new FIBA ambassador. He signed on Friday to help with the tournament.

US Navy applies lessons from costly shipbuilding mistakes

The U.S. Navy appears to have learned its lesson after cramming too much technology onto ships, and rushing them into production. In recent years, several types of ships touted as technological marvels have struggled with some of the basics — in some cases breaking down. The Navy's top officer said mistakes can be made when programs move too fast, and says the Navy must be more deliberate in designing and producing new destroyers. The Navy still wants to innovate, though. It's proposing adding hypersonic missiles to the new ship, as well as lasers powerful enough to shoot down aircraft.

World Baseball Classic in Japan to still feature masks

Fans of the upcoming World Baseball Classic are going to see two versions, depending if the games are in the United States, Taiwan, or Japan. In the United States and Taiwan, fans can cheer and need not wear masks. Taiwan dropped most of its mask mandates this week. For Japan, it’s slightly more complicated as COVID rules are changing more slowly. Cheering will be allowed but masks are likely to remain in place at the Tokyo Dome.

Twenty-five years have passed since Southern California won its 12th and most recent national title in baseball. The Trojans once were the gold standard in the college game. Four coaches have come and gone since Mike Gillespie won the 1998 championship. Since 2006 USC has made the NCAA Tournament once and has had a winning record in Pac-12 play just twice. The Trojans finished last in 2022 and are picked 10th in coach Andy Stankiewicz’s first year. The Trojans expect to be on an upward trajectory when they move to the Big Ten in two seasons.

Malik Beasley scored 25 points, Austin Reaves had 17 off the bench and the Los Angeles Lakers returned from the All-Star break with a 124-111 victory over the Golden State Warriors Thursday night. The Lakers had seven players in double figures in what ended up being quiet nights for LeBron James and Anthony Davis. James — who suffered a hand injury during Sunday’s All Star game — had 13 points, but was 5 of 20 from the floor. Klay Thompson led Golden State with 22 points and Ty Jerome added 20.

Serena Williams will be honored for her tennis achievements, business success and efforts to uplift the community at the NAACP Image Awards this weekend. The NAACP announced Thursday that Williams will receive the Jackie Robinson Sports award during the ceremony, which will air Saturday on BET. The award recognizes individuals in sports for their high achievement in athletics, along with their pursuit of social justice, civil rights and community involvement. Williams holds 23 Grand Slam singles titles. She has won Wimbledon seven times as a singles competitor. The tennis star served as an executive producer on Oscar-nominated film “King Richard,” a biopic based on her family.

Fed's rate hikes likely to cause a recession, research says

Can the Federal Reserve keep raising interest rates and defeat the nation’s worst bout of inflation in 40 years without causing a recession? Not according to a new research paper that concludes that such an “immaculate disinflation” has never happened before. The paper was produced by a group of leading economists, and two Fed officials addressed its conclusions in their own remarks Friday. When inflation soars, as it has for the past two years, the Fed typically responds by raising interest rates, often aggressively, to try to cool the economy and slow price increases. The Fed’s higher rates, in turn, make mortgages, auto loans, credit card borrowing, and business lending more expensive.

Newcastle forward Miguel Almiron has signed a 3 1/2-year contact extension with the Premier League club. The Paraguay international is Newcastle’s top scorer this season with 10 goals — the first time he’s hit double digits since joining from MLS club Atlanta United in January 2019.
