Gwinnett Police warn of thieves following bank customers, robbing them

Gwinnett County Police are warning the public after several people were robbed after leaving local banks with large amounts of cash.

Officials tell AccessWDUN that a person often goes inside the bank to watch customers who are coming in to withdraw significant amounts of money. After they find the victim, the suspect or suspects follow them.

"They don't attack them there, but they follow them in a separate vehicle to the location where the victim goes," said Officer Hideshi Valle, Gwinnett County Police Public Information Officer. "From there, they either break into the car and steal it or if the vehicle is left unlocked, they open [the door] and take the envelope with cash."

Police say as many as eight incidents like this have happened in the past two months. The victims are often withdrawing thousands of dollars in cash.

For now, investigators do not know if it's one person or a group of people, but in the meantime, they are urging the public to stay vigilant and not make any stops when carrying large amounts of money.

"Most important, don't leave anything valuable, guns, money, or anything like that in your vehicle," Valle said.
