Report: NGMC had $3.5 billion impact on economy in 2020

By Austin Eller News Director

A recent report from the Georgia Hospital Association estimated Northeast Georgia Medical Center had a more than $3.5 billion impact on the local and state economy in 2020.

The report from GHA found that NGMC generated $3,554,257,187 in revenue for the local and state economy, provided more than $70 million in charity care and sustained more than 22,500 full-time jobs throughout the region and state. Northeast Georgia Health System also directly employs more than 9,000 people.

A press release from the hospital system said the more $70 million in charity care does not include unpaid bills that are written off or the nearly $12 million NGMC provided in community outreach.

Carol Burrell, president and CEO of NGHS, said the hospital system's initiatives impact the local and state economy in a variety of different ways.

"Our graduate medical education program, we started that three years ago, now we have over 140 residents that actually reside in the area," Burrell said. "They're here, their families are here, they are buying homes, renting apartments. They're shopping, they're dining, so you know they're having an impact."

Burrell said work on NGMC's many expansion projects, such as the new medical tower at NGMC Gainesville, also have a large financial impact on the economy.

The report only reflected the impact of hospital expenditures and did not include the impact of other services such as physician offices and long-term care facilities from NGHS.

Burrell said the entire staff at NGHS and NGMC helped make this economic impact possible.

"It takes a team," Burrell said. "One of our core values is deep interdependence. There's not any one of us, including myself, that can make this happen."
