Barrow County deputy charged with violation of oath of office

By AccessWDUN staff

A Barrow County sheriff's deputy was arrested Thursday and charged with accessing the personal information of an arrestee without a legitimate law enforcement purpose, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

Derrick Jeffery Turner, 43, of Winder is arrested and charged with computer invasion of privacy and violation of oath of a public officer.

The Barrow County Sheriff's Office last month asked the GBI to investigate Turner for possible criminal misconduct.

The investigation revealed that on April 14, Turner used his Barrow County-issued computer to access the Georgia Crime Information Center network to obtain information related to a subject for personal reasons. Turner was assigned to the patrol division of the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office at the time.

It was not immediately known what type of personal information Turner was seeking. The investigation is ongoing. When it is complete, the case file will be given to the Piedmont Judicial Circuit district attorney's office.

This is a developing story and it will be updated as soon as more information is available.
