N.C. man remains jailed after allegedly attacking Banks County chief deputy with hatchet

The man who was shot April 14 after allegedly displaying road rage and breaking the driver’s side window of an unmarked Banks County sheriff’s office vehicle remains jailed in Forsyth County.

Eric Edward Webb, 43, of Franklin, N.C., is charged with aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer following the April 14 incident involving an officer now identified by the GBI as Chief Deputy Shawn Wilson.

Wilson used his weapon against Webb when “Webb attacked Wilson with a hatchet”, the GBI report states.

Following the incident, GBI reported Webb got out of the truck with a hatchet in his hand after swerving his truck snd trailer at Wilson’s vehicle, causing both to leave U.S. 441 north of Homer.

“Webb began beating on the deputy’s driver’s side window with the hatchet, breaking the glass,” a GBI statement reads. “The deputy fired at Webb while still seated inside his SUV, striking him multiple times.”

The April 14 incident on U.S. 441 is the third officer-involved shooting in Banks County in 2022 and the fourth since August.
