Principal: Gwinnett County student to face charges for assaulting teacher

By AccessWDUN Staff

A high school student in Gwinnett County will face criminal charges and disciplinary action after allegedly assaulting a teacher on Tuesday.

According to a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the alleged assault happened just before 11 a.m. Tuesday at Discovery High School in Lawrenceville. That information came from a letter sent to the school community by Discovery Principal Marci Sledge. The name of the teacher has not been released.

Sledge said physical violence in the school setting would not be tolerated, as it's against the school disciplinary policy and the law.

She also commended another student who attempted to stop the incident.

Other students in the class reportedly uploaded footage of the incident to social media. Sledge said the school is looking into potential disciplinary action against those students.

The AJC reports student behavior and new disciplinary policies have been a frequent discussion point among the community at Gwinnett County School Board meetings throughout the school year. Specifically, critics have blamed a new discipline policy adopted near the start of the school year for increasingly worse student behavior.

Critics claim that recent violent incidents, including the fatal October shooting of a student near Norcross High School, prove that the discipline policy has not worked.
