GSP cites driver who struck pedestrian in crosswalk at Alto prison

A South Carolina man was charged after allegedly striking a pedestrian Thursday in a crosswalk in front of Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto.

Lloyd Wensel, 39, of Westminister told troopers investigating the 5:50 p.m. wreck he did not see 52-year-old Robin Hood of Cleveland in the road due to her dark clothing.

Hood was crossing Gainesville Highway in a marked crosswalk with flashing lights and warning signs in place when Wensel’s Hyundai Elantra struck her with its right front, causing visible injuries and functional vehicle damage, the Georgia State Patrol reported.

The area of impact was in the northbound lane of Gainesville Highway directly in front of Lee Arrendale State Prison.

Hood suffered visible injuries and was taken by ambulance to Habersham Medical Center.

GSP cited Wensel for failure to yield to pedestrian in crosswalk.

Wensel and his three passengers were not hurt.
