Suspect in custody for Hall County shooting

Update:

The suspect in a shooting Monday night near a Hall County grocery store is in custody.

Joseph Omar Mendoza, the suspect in the shooting of his brother, Luis Antonio Mendoza, is now in custody.

Mendoza turned himself into the Hall County Jail Tuesday afternoon, according to the Hall County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities are continuing to search for the suspect in a shooting Monday night near a Hall County grocery store that left a Gainesville man hospitalized with serious injuries.

B.J. Williams, public information officer with the Hall County Sheriff's Office, said Joseph Omar Mendoza, 30, reportedly shot his brother Luis Antonio Mendoza, 29, in the abdomen in the parking lot of Don Mangum Grocery on Harmony Church Road at about 9 p.m.

The suspect reportedly fled the scene in a late-model silver Nissan Rogue, according to witnesses.

Williams said investigators were working to determine what led to the shooting.

Joseph Mendoza has active warrants out for his arrest for criminal attempt to commit murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated assault with a firearm. He is 5'5" and weighs about 140 lbs. He has black hair and brown eyes.

"While the incident is thought to have been isolated, investigators believe Joseph Mendoza is armed and dangerous," a press release from the agency reads.

Anyone who spots the suspect or knows his whereabouts should not approach him but call 911.
