Red Cross experiencing severe blood, platelet shortage

The American Red Cross is asking willing and able people to roll up their sleeves and donate blood and blood products as they experience a critical need.

"Right now, we've seen inventory levels for blood and blood products drop down to the lowest we've seen in the past six years," said spokesperson Ruby Ramirez.

She said the pandemic has impacted their donations. "Here at the Red Cross, we've seen donor turnout decrease about 10% since the spike of COVID-19 happened in August, and we've seen the need for blood remain the same," said Ramirez. She added that turnout overall since the pandemic has decreased, as has the amount of blood drives.

Anyone who wishes to donate can find a blood drive or a donation center using their website, their app, or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.

And, anyone who donates will get an incentive. Until the end of September donors will get a free football-themed t-shirt, and in October, the organization has partnered with Zaxby's to offer a free signature sandwich. Ramirez said in October you may select a $5 gift card to a retailer of your choice instead of the sandwich.

Ramirez said they are appreciative of those who donate blood and blood products, as each blood donation can impact up to three lives.
