Taxi driver arrested in rape of teen in Cornelia

A taxi driver was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly raped a 17 year old girl in Cornelia.

Cornelia Police Chief Chad Smith said the driver, Lester Hoyte, 35, offered the teen a ride home on February 12 around 6 p.m. but instead drove her to a secluded location and sexually assaulted her.

Smith said Cornelia officers responded the report the same day to the Habersham County Shopping Center and warrants were issued Tuesday.

Hoyte, of Toccoa, has been charged with rape, false imprisonment, sodomy and battery, but more charges could be forthcoming. He was arrested Tuesday by Athens-Clarke County Police.

Smith said this is believed to be an isolated incident and the case remains under investigation.
