J&J vaccine distribution paused at Cumming Fairgrounds site

Officials with the Georgia Department of Public Health say they are temporarily pausing vaccinations of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine at the Cumming Fairgrounds site after eight people Wednesday had "adverse reactions."

According to a statement from the Georgia DPH, one of the eight people who experienced a reaction to the vaccine was evaluated at a hospital and later released. The seven other individuals were monitored and sent home.

Georgia health officials have not said what the adverse reactions were.

Health officials said that the vaccines were paused "out of an abundance of caution."

Dr. Kathleen Toomey, Georgia's health commissioner said there is no reason to believe there is anything wrong with the vaccine, and people who have received it should not be concerned.

The agency is looking into what may have caused the reactions, "including the conditions at the fairgrounds such as heat and the ability to keep the site cool," Toomey said.

According to the statement, at least three other states - North Carolina, Iowa and Colorado - have reported adverse reactions of people who have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at some locations.

The statement said that 425 Johnson & Johnson vaccines were administered at the Cumming Fairgrounds site on Wednesday.
