Incentives given as blood donations hit a critical low

Blood donations are critically low in North Georgia and across the country. Incentives are being given to encourage people with all blood types to donate.

According to a press release from LifeSouth, recent tragedies and increased demand due to COVID-19 have put a strain on the national supply. Locally, there is a severe shortage, as well. According to the organization, “Blood donations decrease during the holidays due to travel, weather, busy schedules and school breaks.”

In order to boost supply, now through Jan. 2, all LifeSouth donors will get a gift card as an incentive. The $20 e-gift card is redeemable at numerous retailers and restaurants.

“Many people only think of donating blood after a tragedy or disaster, but blood donors are needed every day to meet the needs of patients,” says the organization. “LifeSouth asks those who do not normally donate, have not donated in a while, or are first-time donors to make a point to donate. Regular blood donors are also asked to come in and bring a friend.”

All blood types are needed. Donating blood takes about an hour and can save three lives. LifeSouth also wants donors to know that you can give blood if you have had a COVID-19 vaccine or a flu vaccine.

Locally, LifeSouth has a location at Habersham Medical Center. There are also multiple and continuous blood drives throughout North Georgia. A LifeSouth bloodmobile will be at the Walmart in Oakwood on Dec. 20, 24, and 29. A unit will also be at the Walmart in Dawsonville on Dec. 23, 24, and 27. More details, along with other LifeSouth blood drive locations across North Georgia, can be found online at lifesouth.org.

According to their website, LifeSouth is a non-profit community blood bank serving more than 125 hospitals across the south. They have more than 30 donor centers, 50 bloodmobiles, and 2,000 blood drives a month.
