Toccoa man hospitalized in accidental crossbow firing

By AccessWDUN Staff

A Toccoa man was taken to the hospital Saturday morning after he was accidentally struck by a crossbow arrow at a home in Clarkesville.

According to a press release from the Habersham County Sheriff's Office, Juan Tellez, 28, was originally taken to the Habersham Medical Center for treatment after he was injured by the arrow. He was then transferred to Northeast Georgia Medical Center where he remained in stable condition as of 11 a.m. Saturday.

Investigators believe Andrew Harrelson, 37, of Clarkesville, was preparing the crossbow at his home on New Liberty Road prior to going hunting with his son later in the morning. As Harrelson was preparing the crossbow, it accidentally fired an arrow, which traveled through the front door and struck Tellez, who was standing on the front porch.

All evidence indicates that the incident was an accident and that no criminal act had occurred, according to the release.

Authorities first learned about the incident after Tellez was transported to Habersham Medical Center. Two witnesses told deputies they were at the home, along with several adults and children at the time of the incident.
