Winder man arrested after stealing from Lula antique store

A Winder man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a shoplifting case at a Lula-area antique store.

Hall County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested 49-year-old Gary Walter Cox Jr. early Wednesday morning after pulling him over in the 5,800 block of Cornelia Highway for a broken headlight.

According to Derreck Booth with the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Cox made two trips to the antique store on Jan. 10, filling his pockets with merchandise and then leaving. “The investigators were quick to get with the store owner who had some very good video surveillance of the theft in progress," says Booth. "So the investigators pulled some still photos that were very clear of the suspects with his hand in the case stealing some items from the store.” They also had good photos of the suspect’s SUV in the parking lot.

Three days later, investigators issued a BOLO (be on the lookout) using those photos. He was identified within two hours of the posts being up on HCSO social media accounts, but investigators could not find him right away.

“Then early Wednesday morning the 20th of January the deputies on patrol stopped a vehicle on Cornelia Highway for a headlight not working. Cox was the driver of that vehicle. Deputies were able to pick him up and arrest him without incident,” says Booth.

Cox faces a charge of felony, theft by shoplifting in connection with the Jan. 10 crime.

He also had an outstanding arrest warrant for misdemeanor theft by taking from last year. In October 2020, Cox stole a helmet and gloves from a motorcycle in the parking lot of the Georgia Department of Driver Services center on Aviation Boulevard in Gainesville. Investigators are working to recover the stolen items.

Cox has since posted bond and is out of jail.
