Burglars steal thousands from Habersham tobacco wholesaler, flee

Two individuals are accused of stealing $7,000 from a wholesale tobacco establishment in the Fairview Community of Habersham County early Sunday before leading deputies on a chase.

Deputies were dispatched to the burglary in progress call at Blue Ridge Tobacco, 2146 Hwy. 105, Demorest, where approximately $7,000 was taken from the business, said Sheriff’s Lt. Matt Wurtz.

“Upon arrival, deputies observed two subjects running from the rear door of the building into a wooded area behind the business,” Wurtz said. “Deputies pursued the subjects but were unable to locate them. Minutes later, deputies located and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a red 2011 Ford F250 seen leaving the area. The subjects refused to stop, and deputies pursued the vehicle into White County. The pursuit ended when the red truck ran down an embankment, through a field, and into the wood line along Highway 17 Alternate. The subjects then fled on foot into the wooded area.”

The individuals involved were not located. The investigation is ongoing.

No additional details are immediately available.
