Gwinnett County Police Department investigators said Tuesday a person found burned in Duluth on Monday had been shot first.

Cpl. Collin Flynn issued an updated press release saying detectives do not know the identity of the victim.

Flynn said the body was that of a man.

Original story Monday, July 20, 3:40 p.m.:

A burned body was found in Duluth Monday morning on a wooded trail off Satellite Boulevard and West Liddell Road.

The man who located the body called 911 and Gwinnett County Police officers responded to the scene, according to a press release from the department.

At this point, officers said in the release that the death is suspicious, but they are unsure if the person died by homicide, suicide, or accidentally.

Officers are asking anyone with information in the case to call detectives at 770-513-5300, or call CrimeStoppers if they wish to remain anonymous at 404-577-TIPS (8477). Anyone with information should reference Case Number 20-053547 when calling.

After locating and confirming the burned body, officers contact homicide investigators and arson investigators. The medical examiner's office was also requested to help process the scene. As per protocol, the identity of the deceased person is being withheld until next of kin is notified.
