Collins blasts Supreme Court decision on DACA

By AccessWDUN Staff

Congressman Doug Collins of Gainesville is criticizing yesterday's (Thursday's) Supreme Court ruling that the Trump administration, for now, cannot end the DACA program.

"By ruling that President Obama can usurp the legislative branch’s authority to unilaterally create law but President Trump can’t undo his unconstitutional actions, the Court is setting a dangerous precedent and a double standard that should concern every American," Collins said in a statement released by his office.

The court ruled that the government failed to give an adequate justification for ending the federal program. But the administration could again try to shut it down by offering a more detailed explanation for its action.

But Collins said it's the job of Congress to create immigration law.

“Let me remind the Supreme Court: it is ultimately the role of Congress – and Congress alone – to pass much-needed immigration reform," he said. "After its second power grab this week, it’s clear that Congress needs to step up and take back its constitutionally granted authority to do its job.”

DACA -- Defereed Action for Childhood Arrivals - allows people brought to the U.S. as children to received deferred action of deportation and become eligible for a work permit.

Collins represents the Ninth District of Georgia in the U.S. House. He's running in November for a seat in the U.S. Senate.
