Hall County School District Superintendent Will Schofield unveiled a pending plan in getting students back to school in the fall.
Schofield that the district is “fully planning on getting back to school” this fall in a video release.
Schofield made this announcement against a background of a diagram outlining a potential plan, which features six elements forming a water wheel.
While Schofield said a more detailed plan is forthcoming, the current steps include Outreach Communication, Mental and Physical Wellness, Instruction, Operations, Technology and Facilities.
Each of these steps is headed up by a member of HCSD staff.
Schofield said each of these elements will play a crucial role in formulating the final plan for resuming instruction in August.
“A day doesn’t go by when I don’t get a request from someone asking ‘When are we going back to school?’ or ‘Are students wearing masks?’,” said Schofield. “All I can tell you is every one of those items is under consideration.”
Schofield also outlined some reasons on why the school district feels students need to return to class in August. Some of the reasons included recent national numbers showing a drop in literacy and numeracy levels among younger students and the potential negative economic impact if parents cannot return to work out of need for childcare.
“If somebody said is it going to be school as normal, of course not and until we get past this season of COVID everything will be a little bit different,” said Schofield. “But what we do want to create is an opportunity for students to get back together, get that learning process rolling again.”
Schofield added that the school district will be willing to work with families who do not feel comfortable going back to school on a regular basis.
