Hall County Sheriff's Office identifies man dead after robbery, car wreck

The man who died following a car accident and armed robbery Monday in Gainesville has been identified by the Hall County Sheriff's Office.

Spokesman Derreck Booth confirmed the 44 year old man was Teron Cortez Smith of Columbus, Ga.

Booth said they responded to an armed robbery call in the 1300 block of Marlow Drive around 3 p.m. Monday. Smith reportedly robbed a man and woman in the home at gunpoint, taking off in a black Nissan with an undisclosed amount of cash.

"As we responding to the initial call, deputies spotted a vehicle matching the description of the robbery lookout at the intersection of Marlow Drive and West Ridge Road, a short distance from where the robbery occurred," said Booth. "Deputies attempted a traffic stop at one point, but the man behind the wheel drove away."

Gainesville Police got involved in the chase and Booth said after traveling a short distance, the car circled back to Marlow Drive and West Ridge Road. It was then involved in the car accident with another vehicle.

Booth said Smith fled on foot, but was quickly located and deputies and Hall County Fire Services rendered aid. Smith was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Smith was located with a bag of money and a fire arm, and had outstanding warrants in Georgia and California.

The robbery is under investigation by the Sheriff's Office and the car accident will be handled by the Georgia State Patrol.
