Gainesville City Council shuts government, waives late fees

By AccessWDUN staff

The Gainesville City Council on Friday voted to shut down most of city government except for the most essential services because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The council also said the city will not turn off water service to customers who can’t pay their bill during the pandemic. The city will waive credit card convenience fees for residents who need to pay bills on the city’s website. And the city won’t charge late fees on any services if the fees were incurred after March 20.

The resolution adopted during a special called meeting Friday afternoon was effective immediately and remains in effect indefinitely.

The resolution cancels all meetings of city boards and committees, including public hearings for rezonings and similar matters, unless they are deemed critical. The resolution said city staff will work with zoning applicants and others to ensure financial impacts and disruptions to business are minimized. It also closes all city government buildings to the public.

On Wednesday, the city council issued a shelter-in-place order for city residents. But that order was superseded by Gov. Brian Kemp’s statewide order on Thursday. The statewide order goes into effect at 6 p.m. today.
