Habersham County fire ruled undetermined, but victim did not die from fire

The cause of the fire that destroyed a 45-year-old home on Yonah Post Road in southern Habersham County on March 7 has been ruled undetermined.

“Due to the severity of damages to the structure, an exact cause is unable to be determined and we are not able to rule out an accidental fire,” said Brandon Wright of the Office and Insurance and Fire Safety Commissioner John F. King.

Alecia Grace Stover, 43, of Alto was found dead outside the burning home at 691 Yonah Post Road just before 7 a.m. Saturday, March 7.

An autopsy showed she died of blunt injuries to the head, according to Habersham County Coroner Kasey McEntire.

Jeramy Ray Chastain, 30, was charged with murder March 10 after being arrested during a traffic stop on Saturday night, March 7. He initially was held on a criminal trespass charge and a false statements and writings charge was added March 9.

“The victim's body was found outside the home and the death is not a result of the fire,” Wright said.
