Georgia postal worker accused of hitting woman with truck

By The Associated Press

WOODSTOCK, Ga. (AP) — A U.S. postal worker was in custody Tuesday and accused of running over a woman in Georgia with her mail truck and lying about it.

The Cherokee Sheriff's Office said Jaynie Underwood, 38, of Acworth, was arrested on charges of improper backing, failure to exercise due care and giving false statements to authorities about the incident which happened March 18. Bond was set at $3,452. It was unknown if she is represented by an attorney.

In a news release, the sheriff's office said deputies responded to a call near Woodstock about a woman lying in the road who had possibly been hit by a vehicle. The victim, Barbara Daniles, 60, of Woodstock is being treated at an area hospital for a serious head injury. Her condition Tuesday was not immediately available.

According to the sheriff's office, Underwood told deputies Daniels was standing in grass near her mailbox as she passed by. She said when she looked back, Daniels was lying in the road. Deputies asked if her truck hit Daniels, but she said it had not.

Investigators later found a residence with a camera that faced the road and saw Daniels walking toward the mail truck, parked next door. The camera footage shows the truck backing up and hitting Daniels. Underwood calls her supervisor after she's seen picking up Daniels' mail and putting it back into her mailbox.
