Blairsville man charged with DUI in wreck that seriously injured passenger

The Georgia State Patrol has charged a Blairsville man with driving under the influence, serious injury by vehicle and traffic charges following a wreck on Ga. 356 near Batesville Friday morning.

A 2006 Honda Civic driven by Dalton Chase Palmer, 24, was traveling east on Ga. 356, said Sgt. C.J. Coffee of GSP Post 7 in Toccoa. While negotiating a curve, Palmer lost control and the car traveled off the north shoulder, striking an embankment with its front. After that impact, the car began to overturn.

While overturning, the car struck a sign, Coffee said. The car came to a final, uncontrolled rest upright in the northbound lane of Odis Barron Road.

“Units arrived to find a vehicle off the roadway that had overturned multiple times with one occupant outside the vehicle injured but ambulatory, and one occupant still in the vehicle with serious injuries,” said Habersham County Emergency Services Director Chad Black.

Palmer’s passenger, April Lee, 24, of Blairsville, was airlifted from the scene by AirLife Georgia 2 to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Palmer was injured and was taken by Habersham County ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Coffee said.

In addition to driving under the influence and serious injury by vehicle, GSP charged Palmer with failure to maintain lane and tire requirements.

The wreck was reported just after 7 a.m.
