Head-on wreck near Clayton claims life of Lakemont man

A wreck on Ga. 15/U.S. 441 just north of Clayton Saturday morning claimed the life of a Rabun County man and resulted in minor injuries to two others, shutting down the busy highway for several hours.

Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa was notified of the head-on collision on Ga. 15 near Clayburn Street at 7:41 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15.

The investigation revealed that a 2002 Chevrolet S-truck, driven by Dylan Kelly, 18, of Clayton was traveling south on Ga. 15 negotiating a curve, said Cpl. John Getty of GSP Post 7. Simultaneously, a 2007 Cadillac CTS driven by Louis Reed, 78, of Lakemont was traveling north on Ga. 15 negotiating a curve. It is reported that Kelly fell asleep while driving, then failed to maintain his lane and crossed the center lines. The front of Kelly’s Chevrolet struck the front of Reed’s Cadillac.

Due to vehicle damage, Reed had to be extricated. He was taken by ambulance to nearby Mountain Lakes Medical Center, where he died due to injuries from the wreck.

Kelly and his passenger, Michael Pate, 20, of Tiger suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The Troop B Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation.
