Gwinnett County Police rescued a kidnapped seven-month-old baby Monday, after the car she was sleeping in was stolen from a parking lot on Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville.

According to a press release from the police department, the department received an emergency call just after 6:00 p.m. from multiple people reporting that a car had been stolen from 4141 Sugarloaf Parkway with the child inside.

The father of the child went inside a store and left the car running with the child inside. When he came out of the store, he saw a Hispanic male sitting in the driver’s seat of the car.

When the father confronted the man, the man reversed the vehicle and began driving recklessly out of the parking lot. The release says the man struck a sign, another vehicle and jumped the curb as he drove out of the parking lot.

Officers from the Uniform Division, multiple Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Aviation Unit began searching the area for the stolen vehicle. An off-duty officer responded to the area and found the vehicle abandoned in a parking lot less than a mile from the location where it was stolen. The child was still in her car seat unharmed, according to the release.

Officers searched the area and found 29-year-old Joshua Rodriguez from Buford. Officers used video surveillance from the location of the kidnapping to identify Rodriguez and arrest him.

Rodriguez was later charged with Aggravated Assault, Kidnapping, Theft of a Motor Vehicle and two counts of Hit and Run, according to the release.
