A former Elbert County Sheriff’s Deputy was arrested Monday in connection with a September 30 officer-involved shooting.

According to a press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, 36-year-old Jennifer Boggs shot Elbert County Sheriff’s Deputy Jonathon Alewine in the hand while responding to a suicide call.

The release states 33-year-old Mac J. Cunningham of Hartwell contacted Elbert County 911 and threatened to harm himself. Cunningham hung up the phone before the 911 dispatcher could get any information from him.

Elbert County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were able to find Cunningham’s location, which was in a cemetery on Rehobath Road in Bowman. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Cunningham sitting inside a pick-up truck with a handgun, and he indicated that he wanted to harm himself, according to the release.

Deputies tried to help Cunningham and get him to surrender the gun. Deputy Jonathon Alewine tried to break the side window of the vehicle when Boggs fired her handgun multiple times. The release states Alewine was shot in the hand by that gunfire.

An investigation determined that Cunningham did not fire a weapon in the incident.

The release states Boggs faces several charges, including two counts of aggravated assault and one count of reckless conduct.
