Community mourns after Atlanta teacher shot in carjacking

By The Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) — Police are investigating after an Atlanta elementary school teacher was shot to death in an apparent carjacking

Ricardo Knox was killed Monday night at his Cobb County apartment complex. Cobb County police tell local news outlets he was ambushed. Knox was pronounced dead at a hospital later.

Sister Diamond Knox, who is also a teacher, said her brother was devoted to serving his community

“We wanted to ensure that we would be able to set a lifelong legacy for those kids that are similar to us,” she said.

Knox taught fourth grade at Slater Elementary in Atlanta and was also an aspiring fashion designer.

“He did an outstanding job inspiring students. You could often hear him telling children to do the best that they can do,” former co-worker Tonya Williams-Saunders said.

Knox insisted his students dress well so they could make a good first impression. The fourth grade teacher was known to go into his own pocket to buy school supplies and even feed kids.

Knox lived by the mantra “if you don’t believe in yourself, no one will,” said his cousin, Tisa Smith.

“He worked to inspire, because he himself was an inspiration,” Smith said.

Smith said Knox impressed family and friends with his clothing creations ― customized sneakers, sweatshirts and other items he sold online. Smith said his apartment looked like a designer’s studio with an entire clothing collection now left unfinished.
