Georgia jailer arrested on sexual assault, battery charges

By The Associated Press

WAYCROSS, Ga. (AP) — A jailer in Georgia is free on bond following his arrest on sexual assault and battery charges.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested Matthew Lawrence, 22, of Blackshear on charges of aggravated sexual battery and sexual assault by persons with supervisory or discipline authority, WSAV-TV reported.

The Ware County Sheriff's Office on Monday asked the GBI to investigate allegations that Lawrence assaulted a female inmate earlier that day.

Lawrence is free on bond. It was unknown if he has an attorney who could speak on his behalf. He has worked at the jail for less than a year, the GBI said.

Anyone with information regarding the case is encouraged to contact the Ware County Sheriff’s Office or the GBI Region 4 office.
