Kitchen fire results in burns to Demorest woman

A woman suffered burns in a cooking fire in western Habersham County Wednesday night.

Just after 7:30 p.m., Habersham County E-9-1-1 reported a structure fire at 142 Savannah Ridge Trail, Demorest.

“Units arrived to find a single-story residence with smoke showing,” said Habersham County Emergency Services Director Chad Black. “Crews were able to quickly determine this was a single-room fire, in the kitchen, and able to quickly make an interior fire attack and extinguish the fire. There was extension to the cabinets and smoke throughout the structure.”

Black said the victim was injured while trying to douse the flames.

“One occupant apparently attempted to extinguish the fire and received burns to her hands and face,” Black said. “This patient was transported directly to the burn unit at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. No word on her condition.”

The fire was started by food on the stove, Black said.

No other injuries were reported, and all units returned to service by about 9 p.m.
