GBI, Cornelia investigating suspected murder

Officials are releasing few details of a Cornelia death investigation that began Sunday morning and appears to be a homicide.

“On Sept. 29 around 10 a.m., officers responded to a possible suicide at a residence located on Straight Street, where a deceased 36-year-old white male was located,” said Cornelia Police Chief Chad Smith in a written statement. “The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested and has taken over the investigation. It is suspected that the 36-year-old was murdered.”

Smith said information about the victim will be released by the Habersham County Coroner’s Office after family notifications have been made.

“Further information on the case will not be released while the case is being investigated,” Smith said.
