Joe Yarbrough wins rain delayed Hartwell Hobby feature

By Brandon Reed Reporter

It might have taken a little later in the night due to Mother Nature, but Joe Yarbrough took home the win in Saturday night’s Hobby feature at Georgia’s Hartwell Speedway.

Yarbrough took the lead as the field filled past the flag stand on the second lap, and went on to record the win at the 3/8-mile clay raceway.

The Athens, Georgia racer started the night by putting his car on the outside of the front row for the feature in qualifying, with Cody Segars putting up the fastest time to score the pole.

As the field rolled for their pace laps prior to the feature, Mother Nature played a hand, as a pop-up thunderstorm appeared above the raceway, sending drivers and fans scrambling for shelter.

Within minutes, track owner Marty Lance was already on track, working to keep the track in race condition. When the storm cell passed, Lance and his track prep team were joined by several racers from all divisions to get the track back to race condition.

Within an hour, what looked to have been a washout became a full race night, as the Hobby field pulled back on the track for their event.

On the drop of the green flag, Segars powered to the lead, with Yarbrough in pursuit. Segars’ car slipped up as the field made the first pass through turn four, allowing Yarbrough to pull alongside.

Yarbrough would complete the pass as the field raced into turn one on lap two, with Segars in hot pursuit.

Segars would try time and again to find a way around the leader, but in the end, it was Yarbrough driving away to the victory.

Segars had to settle for second, with Brant Carey in third, John Howard in fourth and Shane Yarbrough in fifth.

In other action, the Limited Late Model feature proved to be a race of attrition. First Grant Jordan edged out Chris Woods for the lead, but was sidelined shortly thereafter with mechanical issues.

That moved Chris Woods to the point, with Wesley English in second. Woods had built up a substantial lead when his car slowed suddenly on the front stretch, ending his night and moving English to the lead.

English then tried to build an advantage on the remaining field, with Mason Tucker in second. But with a few laps remaining, English’s car slowed on the backstretch, handing the lead to Tucker.

From there, Tucker powered to his second straight feature victory. Behind him, Stephen Segars passed Rusty Jordan on the final lap to take second when Jordan’s car slowed suddenly coming to the checkered flag. Jordan would be coast across the line to round out the podium.

Frankie Beard held off Danny Sanders to win the Crate Late Model feature. Adam Partain finished in third, with Nick Deitz in fourth and Cody Pritchett in fifth.

Chris Cape held off a hard charging Smoky Roberts to win the Modified Street feature, with Thomas Segars in third, Chad Puckett in fourth and Johnny Pilgrim in fifth.

Evan Brown edged out Rocky Jones to take the Stock V8 feature win. Chance Segars, Cameron Collette and Jake Jordan rounded out the top five.

Bryce Alewine took the win in the Stock 4 feature, with David Walker in second, Elliott Brayboy in third, Dalton Bailey in fourth and Jacob Rhome in fifth.

Hoyt Partain was the winner in the Young Guns feature. Tanner Nation followed in second, with Dustin Young in third, Alyssa Goldsmith in fourth and Logan Gunter in fifth.

Alex Powell scored the victory in the Front Wheel Drive feature, with Dillon Christian second, Candace Richey third, Caleb Nicholson fourth and Michael Davis fifth.

Racing returns to Hartwell Speedway on Saturday, August 24. Check Hartwell-Speedway.com for more information.
