West Hall High officer saves choking student

A Hall County Sheriff's Office School Resource Officer is credited with helping a student that was choking on a grape during lunch at West Hall High School Thursday.

Deputy Zack Marley was called over to the 15-year-old girl around 12:10 p.m. by teachers, according to a press release from the Hall County Sheriff's Office. The student pointed to her throat and nodded "yes" when Marley asked if she was choking.

Marley performed the Heimlich maneuver on the female student, and after about six to eight abdominal thrusts, the student said "it's out" and was able to tell Deputy Marley "yes" when he asked if she was ok. She was checked out by the school nurse and did not require additional treatment.

The Sheriff's Office said Marley had received first aid training from both their office and the Hall County School District, and that this was the first time Marley had to perform the maneuver and he said he felt some fear, but his training kicked in.

“It scared me because that is one of my students,” Marley told the Sheriff's Office. “I look at them as my own kids, so when I see one of them is in trouble, it startles me. I go into action on helping my kids. They’re not just students, they’re my kids.”
