Chief: Hiawassee police making a dent in drug distribution

Hiawassee police today announced the recent drug distribution arrests of two individuals resulting from traffic stops in the city.

On Sunday, July 28, a violation of Georgia’s hands-free law led to a traffic stop in the city.

The driver, Joseph Llorens of Cleveland, was arrested for driving with a suspended driver’s license, according to information released by Chief Paul Smith today.

When officers inventoried the vehicle, they located 98 grams of methamphetamine and 28 grams of marijuana.

Additionally, Llorens is charged with trafficking methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana, possession and use of drug-related objects, and driver to exercise due care.

Additionally, Richard Deaton of Flowery Branch was arrested June 30 after a Hiawassee police officer stopped him for a vehicle equipment violation.

While conducting a probable cause search of Deaton’s vehicle, officers located 18 grams of methamphetamine and four grams of marijuana, according to Smith.

Deaton is charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and turn signal requirements, according to Smith.

“While it is unfortunate that people are bringing these drugs into our community, our officers are doing a fantastic job in detecting and arresting those who are responsible,” Smith said. “Arresting the drug dealers is a very important step in combatting the drug problem. I’m proud of the work we’re doing in Hiawassee.”

The discovery of 98 grams of methamphetamine is one of the largest drug seizures made by Hiawassee Police Department, according to Smith.
