Crews search near Georgia port for worker who fell in river

By The Associated Press

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Authorities are still searching for a missing construction worker at the Port of Savannah a day after the contractor fell into the water near the docks.

News outlets report two workers fell into the Savannah River after the boat they were on bumped into a barge Wednesday. One of them surfaced and climbed out of the water safely, but the other remained missing Thursday.

Savannah Fire Rescue spokeswoman Jenel Few said Thursday the search had switched from a rescue to recovery effort. The Coast Guard and other local agencies were still on the river looking for the missing worker.

Georgia Ports Authority spokesman Robert Morris said the worker was employed by a construction company contracted to renovate docks at the port.
