Toddler flown for care after near drowning at Cornelia daycare

A child was flown to Atlanta for care after a near drowning incident at a Cornelia daycare center Wednesday morning.

“At 10:37 this morning, Habersham 9-1-1 received a call reporting the drowning of a 4-year-old at Foundations Academy in Cornelia,” said Habersham County Emergency Services Director Chad Black.

That daycare center, on Old Athens Highway, has an in-ground pool behind the facility.

“Habersham County Emergency Services, Cornelia Fire and Demorest Fire responded and arrived to find a 4-year-old who had been removed from the water and per bystanders on scene,” Black said. “CPR was administered prior to any of our agencies’ arrival. The child was found conscious upon arrival of first units.”

A medical helicopter immediately was placed on standby.

“Due to the information provided, and circumstances of age and near drowning, Air Life was requested, and the child flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Scottish Rite Campus,” Black said.

Habersham County Sheriff’s Office personnel also responded.

No further information on the condition of the child is immediately available.
