Hartwell child seriously injured by exploding liquids near Gillsville

A bottle of flammable liquids near an outdoor debris pile exploded about 10 p.m. Friday, resulting in burns to a Gillsville child.

The 8-year-old boy from Hartwell, whose name has not been released, suffered burns to his face and arms after apparently tossing the plastic bottle into the fire, according to Banks County Fire/EMS Chief Steve Nichols.

“The burns were mostly second degree and the patient was stable,” Nichols said Monday.

The child was transported to the burn unit in Greenville, S.C., hospital for care.

“The patient was listed as serious condition and the incident was ruled accidental by Banks County Fire Department,” Nichols said Monday. “One minor injury was also reported on a female patient with minor burns to her legs.”

The second patient, who was in her 20s, was checked on the scene and released.

Nichols said the child was in the area visiting his grandfather.

Banks County emergency personnel remained on the scene for four hours, terminating the incident at 2 a.m. Saturday.
