Forsyth County leaders want to be involved in Chattahoochee River Greenway project

Forsyth County leaders discussed the details of a Chattahoochee River Greenway study being done by the Atlanta Regional Commission.

Deputy Director of Planning and Community Development, Vanessa Bernstein-Goldman, told the board some of the details of the study.

"If you look at the map, which is one of the reasons why I thought it was very important to bring this study to your attention, currently the Greenway is on the other side. It's on the Gwinnett side. We currently have the bike and pedestrian plan on our side," Bernstein-Goldman said. "So, we really want to engage in the discussion."

The $1.5 million dollar study hopes to connect federal and state properties along the river to create the Greenway that would span multiple counties and run all the way into Atlanta.

Bernstein-Goldman encouraged the board to get involved and said, "The state could really take into account as to if there is, you know, essentially a trail resources on both sides of the river, then what are the optimal connection points."

The staff asked the board to approve a request to meet formally with the Trust for Public Land and the Atlanta Regional Commission to learn more about the project, as well as permission to list any upcoming public meetings about the project on the county's website. The staff also wants approval to attend the sub-area meetings.

The project should wrap up in the spring of 2020.
