Tentative millage rate rollback, budget approved by Gainesville City Schools

The Gainesville City School Board tentatively adopted a budget and millage rate for fiscal year 2020.

The board unanimously approved the tentative budget and a tentative rolled-back millage rate of 6.612 at their meeting Monday night, which Superintendent Jeremy Williams said would be the lowest millage rate in 20 years.

"About 10, 12 years ago we were in a financial position that didn't allow us to do that and in the last few years we've really been able to streamline some of our resources we had but also look real closely at out budget. When the economy is good and we see the taxpayers are supporting us, it's good to help them out as well and rollback the millage rate."

In addition, classified employees received an extra bump in pay. Initially, Williams announced that classified employees would be getting a 3% pay raise, and instead they were able to bump that number up to 4%.

"3% is what we were initially looking at, as we started to dig deeper in to it, we knew we'd be able to do the full rollback and go up to 4%."

Certified staff will see a $3,000 increase, and there will also be step increases as planned.

Since there will be no public hearings, as the millage rate being rolled back does not require hearings, the board will hold two budget meetings. The first will be June 3 and the second will be on June 17, after which the budget and millage rate will be finalized. Both meetings are at 5:30 p.m. and will be at the School Board office on Oak Street.
