GOP's Weld says he's most pro-choice candidate in 2020 race

By The Associated Press

EXETER, N.H. (AP) — A Republican pursuing a long-shot primary challenge of President Donald Trump says he feels "terrible" about a spate of recent abortion laws approved by legislatures in conservative states.

Bill Weld told a crowd in Exeter, New Hampshire, that government has no business interfering with a woman's decision to have an abortion.

The former Massachusetts governor says he is "the most pro-choice person you're ever going to meet."

Weld's stance places him well outside many in the Republican Party on abortion-related issues.

A new law in Alabama largely restricts abortion, with no exception for cases of rape or incest. Georgia and Missouri also recently passed tougher restrictions.

Conservative activists anticipate the laws will be challenged in court and hope they will eventually wind up before the U.S. Supreme Court.
