Habersham E-9-1-1 asks public for help updating livestock owner database

MT. AIRY — Habersham County E-9-1-1 operators are updating their livestock registry to help dispatchers notify animal owners in the event of an emergency.

“We are trying to update our information on livestock owners,” said Habersham E-9-1-1/Emergency Management Agency Director Lynn Smith. “When an officer gets out with livestock in the roadway, it is left up to us to try and figure out who the owner is. Often, the owner is deceased or no longer has livestock and it becomes a guessing game and multiple calls, sometimes coming at 2 a.m.”

Whether someone owns one donkey, a few sheep or goats or a large herd of cattle or horses, Smith asks them to call (706) 778-3911 to provide some basic emergency information.

“We need who the owner is, a valid phone number, what type livestock and a location,” Smith said.

This applies to anyone who owns livestock in Habersham County, even if they previously have called with information.
